They’ve been making wine around Ronda since Roman times. To try some of the local varieties, accompanied by yummy tapas, head to Bar Siempre Igual (Calle San José 2) or Bar El Convento (Calle San Francisco 140). Both are part of the town’s ‘ruta de vinos’ (wine route; www.ruta-vinos-ronda.com), which promotes local wine-related businesses including vineyards.

Around Ronda
Ronda is a stop on one of the great train journeys of southern Spain, the Algeciras–Bobadilla route, which meanders through the valley of the Río Guadiaro via the white towns of Gaucín and Jimena de la Frontera.
The town is also a good base for excursions by car. Just a few kilometres west of town are the remains – theatre, forum and public baths – of the 1st-century BC Roman town of Acinipo (tel: 951–041 452; Wed–Sun 9am–2pm; free) at Ronda La Vieja.
Further afield, southeast of Ronda, the Parque Natural Sierra de las Nieves stretches almost to Marbella. It is famous for a rare species of prehistoric fir, the pinsapo, which grows only above 1,000 metres (3,200 ft), and also for the Capra pyrenaica or ibex; some pairs of golden eagles also survive. Access by jeep trail via the towns of El Burgo (for more information, click here, Yunquera or Tolox (for more information, click here) is relatively unrestricted.
West of Ronda, the Parque Natural Sierra de Grazalema (for more information, click here) covers an area of almost 50,000 hectares (120,000 acres), including 13 villages, mainly in the province of Cádiz. The flora and fauna on this side are more varied, but access is strictly controlled, and some of the routes in the pinsapares (which also exist here) are closed during the summer months as a precaution against forest fires. The main park office is in the small town of El Bosque (for more information, click here).
